The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
