We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together lies a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
